a bullet-pointed life

almost 12am, here i sit with a cup of coffee and four strategic plans minimized on my laptop.

as i go through the loooong, seemingly never-ending process of developing my departments' strategic plans, i can't help but think about the plan that God wrote when he was establishing the objectives and tactics of my life.

creating these strategies is a bit stressful. the success of the entire next year lies in the plan i am charged to create. in our case, 2/3 of the revenue streams for our business are dependent upon the objectives and tactics i commit to in these plans.

the best part about this process, i must not so humbly admit, is that i have control over this plan. it's an empowering feeling to be given four pertinant pieces of the company and essentially told, "let your will be done."

i often try desperately to acquire that same power in the strat plan God created for my life. i ignorantly act as if his plan for me is not complete. like he started writing it when i was in my mother's womb, and then he got bored, tired or distracted and just stopped in the middle of it...leaving countless bullet points for me to fill in.

yet when i run with this mindset for too long, it just doesn't seem to work. when i take the pen out of His hand and start to write, the story takes a turn for the worst, and His plans for me are put on hold while i pursue my own.

God always provides the road...but i'm too stubborn to begin faithfully walking down it without a roadmap. four weeks from now i will pass out copies of my strat plans to my entire staff and explain the motives and logic for each goal, event and responsibility. they will receive explanation for every step they take before they even lace up their shoes.

if given the choice would i take a peak at the strat plan for my life? would i print it off on "nicole smith" letterhead and put it in a three ring binder with a smiling photo of myself on the front. would i desire to know, from start to finish, from one moment to the next, each step laid out for me during my time on this earth.

as much as the need and desire for control defines me, i can honestly say no. although i'd like to get some answers to moments past, i know they will come in time. for today, i will leave my strat plan on the shelf, lace up my shoes and continue to try my best to walk by faith.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

I always think God chooses not to tell me too far ahead, because I would never believe His plans were possible.

p.s. on a less serious note...how have I not mentioned to you how excited you must be that Favre is back...Go JETS, huh?

gross, gross, gross. give it up. i have more respect for people who bow out gracefully and can admit when their career is over. now he'll be prancing around new york in his tapered wranglers. at least he'll be farther from minnesota. :)

my thought for the day: i know i can get through TODAY's bullet point because HE's already gotten me through the past's bullet points! some times not knowing the plan is so scary, but at least we can look back at the past's roadmap and see how we got to this day...obviously, i am preaching to myself!! but at least we're on a similar bullet point.
